What is a Registered Agent?

A registered agent is in its simplest description; someone who is appointed to accept legal notices on your behalf. Business entities are required to have a registered agent so that you the general public can easily look up the business on the secretary of state or corporations division website, see who their registered agent is, where their registered office is, and send them a legal notice or hand deliver such notice.

A registered agent is the same thing as a statutory agent.

Failure to maintain a registered agent will almost always cause your company to fall out of good standing with the state(s) it is registered in. You will lose your permission to operate legally in that state.
